Srinagar, Aug 28 (KNO): The water level in River Jhelum has started receding, bringing much-needed relief to Kashmir after days of incessant rainfall, the Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) Department said on Thursday. Chief Engineer, I&FC Kashmir, Er Showkat Hussain, told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that the water level has dropped by more than seven feet at Sangam and by over 1.5 feet at Ram Munshi Bagh. “Our embankments are strong, the manpower is fully alert, and all 14 established flood zonal committees are closely monitoring the situation. There is no need for panic as of now,” he said, adding that the department is maintaining a strict watch. It is worth mentioning that Er Hussain was appointed as in-charge Chief Engineer I&FC Kashmir on Wednesday, filling a key post that had been vacant since March this year following the retirement of Braham Jyoti Sharma. The appointment came as part of a broader administrative reshuffle in which the government elevated eight in-charge Superintending Engineers as temporary Chief Engineers across various wings of the Jal Shakti Department. The move, announced by Jal Shakti Minister Javed Ahmed Rana, aims to strengthen leadership, ensure uninterrupted public services, and maintain the timely execution of flood and irrigation works ahead of the winter season. With the Jhelum receding and monitoring teams on the ground, officials said the situation is under control and there is no immediate threat of flooding in the valley—(KNO)
